"That’s what readers want to see. And to be born with that perfect smile is almost impossible. But today you can buy it. With sophisticated procedures like dental implants and teeth whitening the possibilities are endless. But it costs. It’s easy to spend tens of thousands of dollars to try to get a perfect smile.” says Whyte.
As the number of models getting cosmetic surgery grows, so does the amount of concern from the general public. Recently, a select committee in London concluded that adverts for cosmetic surgery pose a risk to society. According to the select committee, the cosmetic surgery industry “cynically” feeds on people’s anxieties about their appearance.
The report did not seem to faze any of the top models. Shortly after its release Naomi Campbell said “cosmetics is an art form. It’s no sin to touch up your face or body to make it look the way you want.”
Stress and environmental factors are reasons why models turn to cosmetic surgery to prevent their faces from turning into war zones. Pimples, dehydrated skin, chapped lips and tired looking complexions must be revived to look dewy by the next day’s shoot.
“Time takes its toll,” says esthetician Nancy Harris. “No matter how beautiful a model is it’s important for them to have the right makeup for emergency situations. If a model is going through the menstruating period it’s necessary for them to use the proper liquids and makeup to get rid of glaring pimples. If the model goes to a photo shoot with chapped lips they need to have a good lip balm handy. If they’re not prepared it could prove costly.”
Most women and men who read the big fashion magazines want to have an athletic physique and look as thin as the featured models. They spend thousands of dollars a year on diets, manicures, pedicures, carefully colored hair and tanning beds to look glamorous.
